Socrates。 469 BC–399 BC, was a Cla ssical Greek philosopher. Credited as on e of the founders of Western philosophy, he is an enigmatic figure known chiefly t hrough the accounts of later classical w riters, especially the writings of his stud ents Plato and Xenophon, and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes. Man y would claim that Plato's dialogues are the most comprehensive accounts of S ocrates to survive from antiquity.[2] Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogu es, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, an d it is this Platonic Socrates who also le nds his name to the concepts of Socrati c irony and the Socratic method, or elen chus. The latter remains a commonly us ed tool in a wide range of discussions, a nd is a type of pedagogy in which a seri es of questions are asked not only to dr aw individual answers, but to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at ha nd. It is Plato's Socrates that also made important and lasting contributions to t he fields of epistemology and logic, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains strong in providing a foundatio n for much western philosophy that foll owed. As one recent commentator has put it, P lato, the ideapst, offers "an idol, a maste r figure, for philosophy. A Saint, a proph et of the 'Sun-God', a teacher condemne d for his teachings as a heretic."[3] Yet, t he 'real' Socrates, pke many of the other Ancient philosophers, remains at best e nigmatic and a t worst unknown.
