He is a mysterious figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his most famous student Plato.Socrates has become well known for his contribution to the field of ethics.His method of teaching, known as the Socratic Method, by asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to explain ideas remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions. Man y would claim that Plato's dialogues are the most comprehensive accounts of S ocrates to survive from antiquity.[2] Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogu es, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, an d it is this Platonic Socrates who also le nds his name to the concepts of Socrati c irony and the Socratic method, or elen chus. The latter remains a commonly us ed tool in a wide range of discussions, a nd is a type of pedagogy in which a seri es of questions are asked not only to dr aw individual answers, but to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at ha nd. It is Plato's Socrates that also made important and lasting contributions to t he fields of epistemology and logic, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains strong in providing a foundatio n for much western philosophy that foll owed.
